History of the Riverside Theater
Housed within the historic Riverside Church in Morningside Heights, the Riverside Theatre is a fully equipped, fully staffed, 250-seat proscenium theater that hosts full productions, readings, festivals, comedy nights, concerts, screenings, and more. Founded on the belief that the arts can be a transforming power in peoples’ lives, TRT has presented and provided access to performing artists from all over the world including historic ties to Alvin Ailey, Joseph Papp’s Shakespeare in the Park, and our recent prominent guest–Manhattan School of Music. As an institution that has hosted influential figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela, TRT has long served as a platform for discussions of civil rights and political action and welcomes events of all kinds.
